Year 1 & 2

Welcome back after the Easter break. We hope you all had a lovely rest and have your fingers crossed for some more sunshine!!

This term we are starting a topic about ‘Toys.’ The children will be able to look at how toys have changed throughout time, make their own toy and find out about toys that are played with around the world. We will be writing diary entries, retelling stories and creating a ‘lost’ poster linked to the story ‘Dogger.’

Curriculum Newsletters:

PE:

PE will continue to be on a Monday afternoon with Mrs Issitt (HLTA) and on a Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Thomas so please can you make sure that your child has the correct PE kit on these days.  This includes a plain white t-shirt, plain navy or black shorts and trainers.

Homework:

Thank you for your support with learning at home so far.  Reading regularly with your child is one of the most powerful ways that you can have an impact upon their learning.  Remember to make reading a positive experience, talking about the book, looking at the pictures and asking your child questions about what they have read.  This will improve their experience of the book whilst developing their comprehension skills.  Your child is free to change their book themselves when they have read it. We regularly assess your child’s reading and comprehension skills and they will progress through the levels accordingly.

Please continue to encourage your child to do their homework as it supports and consolidates the learning we are doing in the classroom.  It is important that it is completed each week.

Spelling Test

Please use the look, read, cover, write and check method when learning spellings at home.

Tuck shop: Tuesday

Tuck shop is open at morning break. 40p will buy biscuit & juice. You may bring fruit any day to eat at break.

Every Day

Please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school each day.  We do not have a water fountain in our classroom and the children are often thirsty after breaktimes and PE lessons.  Thank you for your co-operation with this.

Start and End of the Day

The EYFS door will be opened at quarter to 9. this door will be locked at 9am, if you arrive after this time, please enter through the main school entrance. Key Stage 1 finish at 3:20pm.

Maths

We had to match up the calculations that were equal to each other.

Maths- Place Value

We have been investigating place value by making numbers using counters in a table and then seeing what numbers we could make when we only had 6 counters.

PE

Year 1 and 2 have been focussing on team games this half term and the weather has been kind to us. All children have show determination and perseverance during these lessons as they encouraged each other.

Cupcakes

In our Design and Technology lessons Year 1 and 2 have been designing and making cupcakes.  Firstly we tasted plain sponge and thought about how it could be improved.  We decided to add more flavour by adding lemon, chocolate or fruit.  Then we decorated our cupcakes carefully.  Finally we evaluated the taste of our finished cupcakes, thinking about what went well and how we could further improve our recipes for next time.

Mark HeraldMark HeraldMark Herald

Year 1 and 2 have been inspired by the work of Yorkshire artist, Mark Hearld, and are currently creating their own art in response.  Mark has a fascination with nature and creates paintings, collages and prints to celebrate it.  We are making our own printing blocks and are looking forward to creating our prints.  Watch this space!

Eco Day Harlow Carr

Year 1 and 2 joined children from Fountain’s Earth to attend an Eco Day at Harlow Carr. We had lots of fun making minibeasts using twigs and leaves, carrying out a treasure hunt around the garden and creating our own wormery to take  home.
